The Renaissance Age of Harlem, New York

Beginning in 1919 following the end of World War 1, the Harlem Renaissance helped to fix the highly segregated communities of the Harlem area of New York. During this time, music such as "The Blues", ragtime, and jazz were very popular, as well as urban modern art. But, in 1929, the stock market crash brought on the Great Depression and the end of the Harlem Renaissance.
This Harlem Renaissance compares and contrasts to the Medieval Renaissance in many ways. For example, both times of rebirth were a great flourishing time of art, music, and literature. On the other hand, they are quite different because the Harlem Renaissance ended because of racism and money, while the European Renaissance ended because its golden age eventually died out over time.

To conclude, both the Harlem and European Renaissance were similar and different in many ways, and were both very influential on more modern settlements.

Harlem Renaissance: The Difference

hThe Renaissance in the 1300s was a time of new age, of new arts, and new attitudes. People have tried new art techniques, new styles. But this was not the only Renaissance. People remember this Renaissance, when there was also another, much later than this. Zooming into the future, the Harlem Renaissance started in the 1920's and ended at the 1930's. Although these are very similar, they have a lot of differences in their own styles in arts, fashion, and music.
The European Renaissance was a bit similar to the Harlem Renaissance in some length. They were both famous for it's new ideas. Both of them were after a "Dark Age". For the European Renaissance, it was afterthe Black Death and the Hundred Years' War. For the Harlem Renaissance, it was still during their Dark Age, the discrimination of African Americans. Also, they had their own influences from different people. For Europe, it was from the Silk roads that connected it from Asia to Europe, carrying caravan loads of new items and ideas. But the Harlem Renaissance artists used their roots, and looked to African designs for ideas.
They also have differences in their artwork. The European Renaissance, for example, used perspective to make their images more realistic. On the other hand, the Harlem Renaissance used oil, canvas, and pecils to make abstract art. Also, the Harlem Renaissance had newer music, likejazz, Blues, and the Blues Gospel. Th Renaissance only had classical music with the lute and other songs. All inall, there were many differences between the Harlem and European Renaissance, but they still had their similarities.

The Modern Renaissance

The Renaissance is a classic example of the European movement that expanded the arts around the world. In the US era, the Harlem Renaissance (a.k.a. New Negro Movement) was another example of this movement, triggered by racism, where the arts (specifically music) were boosted. From this new era, jazz was created which was a way for the black Americans to express their feelings. Other than this, there were new improvements in art, music, and writing. There were several key figures, such as Langston Hughes, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington, during these times which were why the arts successfully improved. In the European Renaissance, similar actions occurred in the art world, where Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci (famous for Mona Lisa), and Raphael were famous for their own works. In both eras, the start of it signaled a new time, where the Blacks were not segregated and the Europeans came out of the Dark Ages. Both the European Renaissance and the Harlem Renaissance were key periods of time where the arts were elevated to a new level.

Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was known as the New Negro Movement. It was a literary, artistic, cultural, intellectual movement that affected and helped lives of many African Americans. This Harlem Renaissance was very similar and different compared to the European Renaissance. Both Renaissances consisted of art, paintings, and literature. Also both the Harlem and European Renaissances emerged after a dark age. This is how they are similar.

The Harlem and European Renaissances are not just similar, but also different. The Harlem Renaissance helped many African Americans while the European Renaissance helped everyone. Also the European Renaissance was caused by a plague and the Hundred Years' War, but the Harlem Renaissance was caused by a different idea. So this is how they are different.

THE Harlem Renaissance and THE Italian Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance, known as the New Negro Movement, started in Harlem, New York. It was a literary, artistic, and cultural movement that impacted the lives of African-Americans through literature, art, music, drama, painting, sculpture, movies, and protests. Compared to the European Renaissance, they both had many similarities and differences. They emerged from a period of poverty and poor economy. Both included the flourishing of many subjects. So, as you can see, they both had many differences.
But, the Harlem and European originated from different sources. The Harlem Renaissance started in Harlem, hence the name. The European Renaissance started in Italy. Also, the Harlem Renaissance mainly had its impact on African-Americans, while the European Renaissance had its impact on basically everyone. The European Renaissance was started from the collapse of feudal society. Many cities grew larger and more wealthy. Due to this, the Silk Roads reopened. The Harlem Renaissance helped the majority of African Americans. This was how they were different.

-Insert Creative Title Here-

The Harlem renaissance and the European renaissance are similar yet different because it was a time after the dark ages. The two places both thrived in writting and in creativity. The harlem renaissance occured in 1919 to 1933 and the Italian renaissance that later lead or spread through all Europe began in 1300-1600. Harlem is recognized from its great music. This includes Jazz and Blues. In the 1900s Jazz was introduced and had a greater impact than the Blues. The Harlem Renaissance was a celebration of African-American heritage expressed through an out pouring of art, literature, music and dance. The Savoy Ballroom, on Lenox Avenue, was a renowned venue for swing dancing, and was immortalized in a popular song of the era, Stompin’ At The Savoy. The major Italian cities became the center of the Renaissance and people from all over migrated to the new urban cities because of their great wealth. It is very different and alike in many ways.

Harlem Renaissance vs. Italian Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of time in which creativity in the arts blossomed among African-Americans. This was similar to the Italian Renaissance was because the Italian renaissance was also a time in which many new artists emerged. The three dominating artists of the Italian Renaissance were, Michelangelo, Ralph, and Leonardo da Vinci. During the Harlen Renaissance was the time in which several new ideas emerged. These ideas included, jazz which is now a very popular music Gender. Like the Italian Renaissance, the Harlen Renaissance took place after the Dark ages which is a bad time for people in a certain area or region. The Dark ages in Harlem was when several African-Americans fled to a different part of new york in order to have better education and to be able to live in much better conditions. The Harlem renaissance was different form the Italian Renaissance because it took place from 1920 to the middle of the 1930s while the Italian Renaissance took place shortly after the end of feudalism in Europe. The Harlem Renaissance started in New York were it was originally called the "New Negro Movement."

The Harlem renaissance and the European renaissance are similar yet different because it was a time after the dark ages. The dark ages is suppose to mean the time when things are bad. Like in Europe they had the plague and the hundred year war. In Harlem the dark ages was when the blacks fled from the west and the south to New york because of bad living conditions and in search of education. In Europe during the renaissance they had great architecture, the Silk Road was used more, like Marco Polo,, and they had great artist like Michelangelo, Ralph, Leonardo da Vinci. During the Harlem Renaissance they had schools that prohibited separate schools for African Americans.

SMILIAR ASPECTS OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

The renaissance of Harlem is similiar to the renaissance that happened in Europe Italy. The two places both thrived in writting and in creativity. The harlem renaissance occured in 1919 to 1933 and the Italian renaissance that later lead or spread through all Europe began in 1300-1600. As we can see the Italian renassaince lasted longer than the harlem one. The harlem renaaissance started by the blacks or as they're called here the negros after World War I. Both areas made magnificent art and this one here is by Leonardo Da Vinvi this painting is known as the Mona Lisa.

Harlem Ghetto is to Renaissance as Middle Ages: ____

During the 1920’s, Harlem’s culture bloomed and a renaissance began in their “ghetto” neighborhood since many different nationalities such as the South and the Caribbean gathered in Harlem. The blending of such diverse cultures and talents led to the beginning of the Harlem’s Renaissance. Another Renaissance took place 620 to 320 years ago in the 1300's to 1600's in Europe. They shared their similarities and differences.

Although both renaissance took place in different centuries, they still have their similarites. First of all, in both cases, artists, talented people, and diverse cultures gathered in a major city. The Europeans gathered in Italy like the Harlem Renaissance took place in Harlem. Moreover, there were significant, talented people who grew famous and rich through the Renaissance period like Leornado da Vinci and Langston Hughes. Without major cities and only spread out towns, I don't believe the Renaissance would have began in the first place. Moreover, talented people are essential to a renaissance or nothing would happen.

Even though both renaissance do have their similarities, they also have their differences. One of their main differences are how the renaissance started. The European Renaissance mainly began because of Humanism, the bubonic plague, and The Hundred Years of War. However, the Harlem Renaissance began because African- Americans wanted to be equal as whites and have the same rights. The renaissance started due to different causes, and if the causes were switched I believe that there would still be the same effect.

Harlem and European Renaissance

The Harlem and European Renaissance was a time of rebirth for both places. These rebirths helped spread ideas for society and also promoted new ideas about art, literature, and music. The Renaissances were a "golden age" for Europeans and African Americans who lived in Harlem.
The European Renaissance started in Italy's cities of Florence, Venice, and Milan. Because these cities had become main places for exchanging goods and ideas, the Renaissance ideas were able to spread more quickly. The European Renaissance brought about new advances in mostly art and literature, but also some in architecture. Some famous artists from the Renaissance time were Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, who painted arts such as the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. The European Renaissance was a prosperous time for the whole continent of Europe and contributed to the development of the rest of the world.
The Harlem Renaissance was a period of written and artistic creativity among African Americans. This rebirth occurred after World War I and lasted until the middle of the 1980's Depression. A major factor leading to the rise of the Renaissance was the migration of African-Americans to the northern cities. The Harlem Renaissance was first known as the "New Negro Movement" because it was a time for African Americans to show their skills. The Harlem Renaissance's legacy was that it redefines how America, and the world, viewed the African American heritage.
The Harlem and European Renaissances were periods of time that helped the locations develop into more successful countries. The rebirths helped spread many ideas and ways of life that are still used in today's world.

Renaissances in Comparison

The Harlem Renaissance and the earlier Renaissance had great benefits, and these benefits came from different pieces of subjects. For example, the Harlem Renaissance's importance came from music, art, dance, theatre, literature, poetry, and writing. The important subject was music, which I will talk about in the following blog. In the earlier Renaissance however, it had a few subjects to handle. This includes art, trade, religion/culture, architecture, and writing. From my opinion, this Renaissance was big on art, plus trade.

Harlem is recognized from its great music. This includes Jazz and Blues. In the 1900s Jazz was introduced and had a greater impact than the Blues. Jazz led to openings of night clubs, for instance, the "Cotton Club" and the "Apollo Theatre." As night clubs opened, this had a sense of relief that was never seen in the Great Depression. Blues, however, was "fused" with Jazz. Blues singers often worked with Jazz bands. Both genres of music were important to the Harlem Renaissance.

The earlier kind of Renaissance, from my opinion, had an importance with art. With artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, they produced art. Many people love art and wish to buy it. If many traders and merchants arrive to the city where artists live or make art, there might be a growth of population. But there wasn't 1 artist. There were many! So think about the population growing and growing. Once trade starts, even a greater population should be expected. This is why I think art was important to the earlier Renaissance.

The Harlem Renaissance refers to an era of written and artistic creativity among African-Americans that occurred after World War I. The Harlem Renaissance was a celebration of African-American heritage expressed through an out pouring of art, literature, music and dance.
Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday were all great musical artists to come out of the Harlem, Renaissance. The Great Depression was at least partly responsible for the end of the Harlem Renaissance as financial necessities became more important than artistic expression. It is certainly an era that African-Americans can be proud of and a time when a once poorly treated people, began to expect more from life. They became more vocal and expressive and they took charge of adding fun and excitement to their lifestyle.

Renaissance means "rebirth". The European Renaissance is the period in European history that followed the middle ages. The European Renaissance mainly focused on classical learning and values. The decline of the feudal system, made the European Renaissance a time of revival of classical learning and wisdom after a long period of cultural decline.

I personally think that the Harlem Renaissance was more important.........

new york harlem renaissance(:

Near the end of World War I the Harlem Renaissance developed while the Hundred Year's War started in Europe. The Renaissance, that occured in New York, was very dark and deppressing. However, the Harlem Renaissance gradually changed from political and social criticism into poetry, fiction, music and art. This era was called the "New Negro". The artists tryed to show their racial experiences and celebrate their culture through their art. The characteristic of their art was free and emotional. The Harlem Renaissance was not occuring in just New York and the U.S., a great number of African American artists traveled to Europe, where they could thrive in an atmosphere that, while perhaps not free of racial prejudice, was at least free from the dreaded Jim Crow laws of the States. The Jim Crow law of States was often used to describe the segregation laws and rules which appeared 1877 and continued until the mid-1960s. This law of States took away many of the rights which had been granted to Blacks.

Harlem Renaissance

Believe it or not Harlem had a Renaissance period just like Europe. Began in Harlem, New York after World War I and ended around 1935. Just like EUROPE, HARLEM went through a period were Music, art work, and learning changed. For Europe middle class started to go to school again and in Harlems sence schools became over crowded because of the free education. Also Europe and Harlem had new painters sprouting up. These painters were ones like da Vinci, Michelangelo, and raphael. From the harlem side they had Palmer C. Hayden, Malvin Gray Johnson, and Laura Wheeler Waring were a few to name that were famous.

From the Dark Ages and Poverty to Bursting with Culture and New Ideas

In 1300 A.D, the Renaissance began in Italy. Creative art styles and classical ideas spread throughout Europe. In 1920, another renaissance began, but this time in Harlem, New York. Although in a different place in the world, the effect was similar. Arts flourished and literature became more common. Harlem transformed from a poor city in poverty to a city full of new ideas. However, exactly what new ideas formed in both renaissances were different.

The Renaissance in Italy was more focused in arts such as painting and sculpting. Famous artists who lived at the time were Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. On the other hand, the Harlem Renaissance leaned to music. Jazz music became very popular among the population, and people like Louis Armstrong and Lil Hardin Armstrong became famous for the music they played. In addition, a new style to play the piano, called stride style, was created during the Harlm Renaissance. As you can see, art was important in both Harlem and Italy.

In addition to art in the Italian Renaissance, literature flourished. writers began to write more about the lives of real people, instead of fictional characters. One of the authors of the time was Dante Alighieri. His greatest work was The Divine Comedy, which focused on spiritual developement. Dante also influenced other authors to write in the native language Italian, instead of Latin, which was also commonly used. Authors in the Harlem Renaissance also wanted to depict the lives of people. Rudolph Fisher, an author during this period wrote The Walls of Jericho, which showed the lives of black people in Harlem. This shows how much literature grew in both Renaissances.

As stated above, the things that grew and flourished in both Italy and Harlem are similar, and different. However, even though some of the ideas were different, the growth of culture happened for the same reason. After the Renaissance, both areas became much more cultured, as opposed to the Dark Ages and poverty.

Two awesomefantasticwonderful Harlem and European Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance took place after WW1 to the middle of the 1930's known as the "Depression". It affected lives of the African Americans through various forms of literature, art, music, drama, painting, sculpture, movies, and protests. The Harlem Renaissance was also known as "the New Negro Movement".

Some of the literary figures that came out at that period of time were" Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and James Weldon. These people wrote fascinating forms of literature. The African American literature had an important impact on their literature and consciousness.

In the ancient renaissance, they also wrote poems and stories. They portray the real life of individuals. Some authors include: Dante Alighieri who wrote the poem The Divine Comedy. He wrote in Italian even though scholars preferred to write in Latin.

Hence, the Harlem Renaissance and the acnient European Renaissance are very similar. They both share the same qualities, even though they both took place at a difference period.

Harlem Renaissance vs European Renaissance (incomplete)

Their are many similarities and differences between the Harlem Renaissance and the European Renaissance. These can be found through a thorough analysis of economical, socio-cultural, technological traits, or aspects, of their Renaissances.

There were many different economical traits that made the Renaissance happen, and be at all possible. Blacks were denied their rights and exploited as croppers and laborers. This made life in the South difficult and Blacks sought a better standard of living and relief, so they migrated North in large numbers. Not only that, industralization was attracting more and more people to cities from rural areas and gave rise to a new ways of thought, and culture. The Europeans, however, had their Renaissance due to the fact that there were less serfs to work the land due to the plague wiping them out. This, and the end of wars ended the Dark Ages.

There were also many socio-cultural traits that affected their Renaissances.

A Renaissance in New York?

We all know about the Renaissance that happened in Europe. But did you know that a Renaissance happened in New York? Harlem is a neighborhood in the New York City, long known as a major African-American residential, cultural, and business center. Up until 1883, Harlem has been defined by poverty, shabbiness, and was luckless. Starting with the job losses of the Great Depression and especially after World War II, rates of crime and poverty increased significantly. Europe in the Dark Ages, went through a series of time like Harlem when there was much poverty and government was very weak. There was much fight over polotics, causing the whole Europe to be poor and unprosperous. The Harlem neighborhood was strongly associated with these and other urban social ills for decades. However, as time passed the people of Harlem started creating entertainment. The Apollo Theater opened on 125th Street on January 26, 1934, in a former burlesque house. The Savoy Ballroom, on Lenox Avenue, was a renowned venue for swing dancing, and was immortalized in a popular song of the era, Stompin’ At The Savoy. In the 1920s and 1930s, between Lenox and Seventh avenues in central Harlem, over 125 entertainment places operated, including speakeasies, cellars, lounges, cafes, taverns, supper clubs, rib joints, theaters, dance halls, and bars and grills. This was the start of their Renaissance. This is very much like Europe's Renaissance because they once were in the Dark Ages, and when art flourished, they were on their way to the Renaissance Road. The lack of jobs became plentiful when a new Body Shop openened and a Ben & Jerry's ice cream franchise openened up and employed the homeless. Harlem once was in the dark ages, experienced a Renaissance, and is on their way to become a prosperous city.

the harlem renaissance

after world war 1, the Harlem renaissance took place. during this time, music flourished, this was the birth of jazz. not only jazz was played during this time, the blues and ragtime was also very popular. being a musician or a composer during this time was considered a good job. the Harlem renaissance ended in the 1930's due to the great depression when the stock markets crashed.

comparing to the medieval renaissance, they both flourished in a specific area. for example, during the Harlem renaissance music was very popular and during the medieval renaissance art was very popular. both were considered a golden age, the Harlem renaissance ended with stock markets crashing.

in conclusion, the Harlem renaissance and the medieval renaissance were very similar in many ways. they both were strong on one specific area.

JUSTIN

The Harlem Renaissance

The European Renaissance wasn't the only renaissance in history. In Harlem, New York, there was an amazing transformation from ghetto, to a platform for literature, art, music, and theater.
In every culture, there has been music. Whether it be folk songs, or pop music like Lady GaGa or Jay Sean today, there has always been a beat to dance to. In Harlem, artists like Louis Armstrong and Edward Kennedy Ellington were the foundation to such music. With the blues and jazz, people were able to express feelings through song, with nothing but a guitar.
Another breakthrough during the Renaissance was drama. Before Harlem, no African-Americans were allowed in theater. However, with the emergence of such plays as Rachel, Mulatto, and On The Fields of France, that all changed.
Literature in Harlem was changed. African-Americans revolutionized writing. Langston Hughes was and is an impact on writing today. Not only writing, but producing plays, he was the most interesting writer of their time.
All in all, Harlem was a GREAT improvement. Just like Italy, there was an emergence of artistic value.

Harlem Renaissance just like Europe's

The Harlem Renaissance is just like the Italian Renaissance. It can be represented by the writing, art and music just like the one in Europe. The art became popular because of its realistic feature. In the Italian renaissance the art called Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci became really popular. The Mona Lisa captures the features of the 24 year old woman. In both the Italian and the Harlem Renaissance, there were influential aritst. The Italian Renaissance included artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo while the Harlem Renaissance included artists like Jacob Lawrence.
The Harlem Renaissance music was the sound of jazz. Jazz was popular throughout the Harlem citizens. It was beginning to be popular worldwide. In the Harlem Renaissance jazz(music) was very important but in the Italian Renaissance it focused mostly on the art and architecture.
The writing in the Harlem Renaissance was very similar to the Italian Renaissance. The only difference is that in the Italian Renaissance many scholars preferred to write in Latin. Many great literary works were made in both the Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance ws very similar to the Italian Renaissance but it also has its differences.

The HarRleM & tHe EuRopEaN RenAIsSaNcE

Both the Harlem Renaissance and the European Renaissance were a rebirth of a particular society that later spread. The European Renaissance started in Italy at the very end of the Dark Ages, a time when most important teachings had been forgotten, and then later spread to the rest of the world. It emphasized the arts and philosophy. The Harlem Renaissance was a rebirth for the African-American people living in Harlem. They were suffering from segregation at the time and Harlem was basically a extremely poor community. The Renaissance was focused on music and literature. All this later spread to the rest of the United States.

The European Renaissance started in Italy in large, Urban cities such as Milan, Florence, and Venice. It focused of the arts, sculpture and painting, with many great artists such as Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. Michaelangelo made many beautiful works such as the ginormous painting on the celing of the Sistine Chapel and and David. The Italian Renaissance also focused of architecture adn engineering such as the Duomo. Over the years, the Renaissance spread from Italy to the rest of the world.

The Harlem Renaissance was in New York. In the neighborhood of Harlem. :) It focused on music such as Jazz and Blues and literature such as plays and poetry. Like the Italian Renaissance, there was art too. Many artists started to paint large murals. During the Renaissance, musicians invented a new style of piano. Now famous poets wrote great poems such as "If We Must Die" and all of Langston Hughes's. Jazz and theater flourished. As you can see, the Harlem Renaissance truly helped Harlem and contributed to the world as it spread out of Harlem and all over the United States.

Everything about the Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance and the European Renaissance were similar and different in many ways.
The Harlem Renaissance was a an era of literary, artistic, cultural, and intellectual creations and discoveries that began in Harlem, New York. It started after World War I, when many, when unskilled workers were in New York City. Many African Americans liked the idea that there would not only be paid labour, but that they would be able to escape all the racism from the south. It can be said that they were granted the oppurtunity to express their heritage through art, literature, music, and dance. For example, African Americans were free to publish their books in an American publishing house. Many African Americans also appreciated education, and since there were many segregated schools in the south, they were attracted to the idea that New York allowed equal educational oppurtunities, and that there would be no segregated schools. The Harlem Renaissance was truly magnificent for many African Americans.
The European Renaissance, started after a war too, the Hundred Years' War. It was an era of creativity, learning, and discovery. It was the time that Europeans got to "experiment, explore, and create," just like in the Harlem Renaissance. After the Middle Ages came to and end, there were many advances in art, architecture and engineering, and writing. This is very similar to the Harlem Renaissance because art and writing were the major subjects, too. In this era, they created new forms of art and architecture. Art was most famous by three artists, two of whom are still known today, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Overall, the two Renaissance were very similar. They both had advances in cultural subjects.

A Renaissance in HARLEM, NEW YORK and a Renaissance in FLORENCE, ITALY

During the 1300s, a renaissance, or rebirth, took place in intellectual learning and education in the arts. This Renaissance held its roots in the major urban cities of Italy and spread throughout Europe. Centuries later, during the 1920s through 1930s, a renaissance occured in Harlem, New York. This was called the Harlem Renaissance, originally the New Negro Movement and it was a period of dramatic increase in individuality, creativity, and intellect. Although these two Reanaissances were separated by barriers of water and land and yet the most significant, time, they are both amazingly similar.

The Harlem Renaissance took place after World War I and many people from the south and West Indies imigrated to Harlem for economic opportunity, making the city have the largest concentration of black people in the world. Similarily, the Italian/European Renaissance took place after The Hundred Years' War, a long series of war between England and France. The major Italian cities became the center of the Renaissance and people from all over migrated to the new urban cities because of their great wealth. Both of these Renaissances were born similarily, being that they erupted as a glorious event starting from one that was devastating.

One of the main aspects emphasized during both Renaissances was education. Before the Harlem Renaissance occured, New York did not follow the steps of its fellow states and prohibited segregated schools. Yet, the promise of equal education increased and soon schools for African-Americans were founded. The population was so large that not all students who desired to attend classes were not able to. This education helped create a generation of philosophers and social and political leaders. Prior to the Italian/European Renaissance, the entire educated middle-class disappeared due to feudalism and foolish rulers. Yet, the Renaissance encouraged education amongst all people. Even if the people did not receive a proper education, the atmosphere around them was brimming with new ideas and priceless items representing the rebirth of the arts. Both of these people knew that the enhancement and emphasis on education would be able to revive the glory of their past. Education was the key to the arising of a "new and improved" generation that would take part in the leading of movements to put an end to the people's troubles.

During the Harlem Renaissance, the arts flourished in the aspect of literature and music. Along the time period of the 1920s to the 1930s, the styles of blues Gospel, stride piano, hot jazz, and pre-swing erupted. This movement lasted as an impact on America's and the world's music environment. Singers' such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, and Fletcher Henderson had their career start in Harlem, New York. African-Americans started to publish their own magazines and a generation of poets and writers arose. To study the arts, many people traveled to Paris, France to expand their horizon of education. During the Italian/European Renaissance, master artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vince, and Raphael began their masterpieces. Many writers and poets also wrote great works to be read even today. Similar to the migration to Paris, many aspiring artists traveled to Florence, Italy where arts were the focus.

Both the Harlem and Italian/European Renaissance were rebirths of education and the arts although separated by centuries, ocean, and land.

New York???? FROM EUROPEAN TO THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE!!!!

The European Renaissance is a rebirth of the arts, and learning. Now lets travel from Europe to the New York's Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was also a time where African Americans "broke out of their shells" , confidence in their culture, and a redefined look at their heritage. When Europe had their artists such as Michelango with the Sistine Chapel, da Vinci with the Mona Lisa, and Raphael, Harlem had their own. Harlem had a painter Aaron Douglas, author Langston Hughes, jazz musician Duke Ellington, blues singer Bessie Smith, and more. With all the creativity of new music and art the African American hertage was redefined, from discrimination to a cultural revolution. The Harlem Renaissance was more than just paintings. The Harlem Renaissance is amazing they had to suffer discrimination and racism, then jumped into a rebirth. The European Renaissance and Harlem Renaissance was quite similar, the Harlem Renaissance brought out more. Thank you for traveling from Europe to New York with me. :)

The Rebirth of Europe... AND Harlem

Europe and Harlem, New York both had Renaissances; Europe's was in 1300 to 1600, and Harlem's was in the 1920's and 1930's. Though the two places were pretty far apart from each other and the time of their Renaissances were very different in terms of time, the two were similar in different in many ways.
The reason of the Renaissance for Europe was similar, but different with Harlem. Europe's Renaissance was caused by the change of society after some hard times. The growth of nations, the deadly bubonic plague, and the Hundred Years' War together brought the system of feudalism to an end. As the system slowly faded away, European cities continued to grow, because of the expansion of trade and the making of a merchant class. With the expansion of trade, many new goods and ideas were introduced to the Europeans. Humanism, for example, developed, and it strengthened the people's desire to experiment and create. Soon, there was an explosion of creativity, marking the start of the Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance started with the migration of African Americans from the south to the north, seeking freedom. About 750,000 left the south, and nearly 175,00o African Americans arrived at Harlem in New York. Because of the huge population of African Americans, cultures and ideas were easily shared, and soon there was a boom of creativity similar to Europe's. The two Renaissances were similar, because they both occurred after hard times.
For both, there was a great explosion of creativity. In Europe, there was an advance in the arts as well as in Harlem. In Harlem, African Americans expressed their feelings and dreams in unique paintings. In Europe, the three artists, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael have created exceptional works of art still admired today. African American newspapers and magazines had begun to flourish in Harlem, leading to the creation of literary works, much like in Europe. Writers in Europe wrote many poems and stories, many of which became famous. The European Renaissance also had breakthroughs in building techniques. Filippo Brunelleschi, an influential European architect, was known for designing and building domes for churches. Another development during the Harlem Renaissance was the making of jazz, becoming a significant part of music history. Like there were great artists and writers in the European Renaissance, there were also great musicians in the Harlem Renaissance, including Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
One last difference was that the European Renaissance only benefited the upper class in the beginning, while the Harlem Renaissance benefited the whole neighborhood. Despite their location and period of time, both Renaissances shared similarities as well as differences and were a significant part of history.

Harlem/European Renaissance

Two major country separated by the ocean can be a lot similar in their aspects. Both Europe and the city, Harlem went through a reborn throughout their life. Even though these are two different countries, many of their aspects had grown and changed throughout their reborn.
An event is something that is talked about in the newspaper for one to two weeks. But if a series of Events is combined together, one can be left with something momumental. There were many names for this era, such as the New Negro Movement or the Black Urban Movement. The Harlem Renaissance refers to an era of written and artistic creativity among African-Americans that occur after World War I and lasted until the middle of the 1930s during the Great Depression. A major factor was the leading to the rise of the Harlem Renaissance was the migration of African Americans to the northern cities. As the days go back until 1935, which marks the end of the Harlem Renaissance, all the golden days had gone away. Many things improved such as music, drama, painting, sculpture, and importantly redefined expressions of African-Anericans and their heritage.
This was also the same in the European Renaissance. This era began in the A.D. 13oo and ended somewhere in the A.D. 1600. In this Renaissance, tehy had political structure, the protonage of its dominant family, the Medici, migrations of Greek Scholars and the texts of Italy. All of the same things also improved that is also in the Harlem Renaissance. Well unlike the Harlem Renaissance, there era didnt end when something tragic began. Like the Harlem Renaissance ended when the Great Depression began, so this could probably mean that the Great Depression caused the Harlem Renaissance to end. Also the European Renaissance didn't have many name such as the Harlem Renaissance. Even though this might seem like a great change in the world, some scholars think that the Renaissance was just an "advance" in their culture.
Even those these two countries are far apart from each other, they have many things in common. They both had renaissances, which later improved many of the same aspects such as literature. Also their renaissance started when there were great tragedies happening.

READ THIS!!! HARLEM GETS A THING CALLED RENAISSANCE!!!

The Renaissance was an era of rebirth of art and creativity. Artists and musicians around the world created new and improved art. In Europe, artists emphasized more on realistic and perspective art than in the Middle Ages. Their paintings gave the feeling of actually being there to watch what happened at that time and place. But in Harlem, New York, the situations were much more harsh. After the World War I, as they were suffering discrimination and racism, African-Americans turned to art and music as a refuge. As you should know, Negroes weren't allowed to work in many facilities and jobs. Most people thought white people were superior and that "colored" people were trash. And during this time, Negroes moved up into the northern states of America where there was hardly any discrimination. Somewhere in between all this chaos, art surfaced. This movement was known as the New Negro Movement, and was later on referred to as the Harlem Renaissance. This art rebirth that happened throughout the planet is very much like the life cycle of a phoenix. It will live. It will perish, covered in its own ashes. And finally, it will be reborn as new and bright as ever.

Harlem and European Renaissance

The "Renaissance", the word that is modernly used to describe an era of creativity in arts, literature, and thought have been an occurence in both Harlem and ancient Europe. The Harlem Renaissance and European Renaissance were of great heights, the "golden age", in which creativity in the arts, literature, and thought bloomed into a large field wonderous works.

During the Harlem Renaissance, otherwise known as the "New Negro Movement", literature of the African Americans drove to its peak. Langston Hughes, very well-known novelist and poet had written stories, including a book named Not Without Laughter, which he had won a Harmon Gold Medal for. Though many other African American authors expressed strong anger, Langston Hughes did not. Georgia Douglas known for her poetry, was a poet during the Harlem Renaissance, had also come along with other many poets and authors to bloom their cultural literature. Music also flourished in the Harlem Renaissance, including Louis Armstrong, who played much jazz, which was the "stylish" music at the time. In ancient Europe, the Renaissance also fashioned in realistic sculpting, mostly of the human shape or form, of "natural qualities". Like Michelangelo, sculptures were his specialty, such as his most famous sculpture of David. Another great artist, Leonardo da Vinci, was also very intelligent who excelled in subjects such as science, mathematics, and engineering. He made accurate illustrations of the human anatomy, and invented and designed the ancient version of the helicopter. Raphael was a famous painter who was most known for The School of Athens, his most known painting.

Their cultures were different, but showed similarity of what within their culture had bloomed. Both Renaissance eras were a peak in which aspects of their culture was their greatest.

Harlem Renaissance=Europe's Renaissance

Both in Europe and even in Harlem there was a rebirth called the Renaissance. They both had similar aspects although the way of decline in Harlem was the depression in the 1930s. Due to this, both eras had a total drop in the population. They both also declined because of war. Europe had the Hundred Years’ War as United States with Harlem included had World War I. These two eras had many similarities and differences having to do with their rebirth.

The Harlem Renaissance refers to an era where there was much written and artistic creativity among African Americans after World War I. World War I created much difficulty because that was the start of the depression in the 1930s and was due to the shortage of labor and money. During this gruesome time, some African Americans produced different types of writing, poetry, fiction, drama, and essay. The Harlem Renaissance was more than just a change in the literary movement; it also caused a racial movement. The racial movement included having blues as a type of music.

In Europe the Renaissance was due to the Hundred Years’ War and also the bubonic plague, soon known as the Black Death. This led to a low population as the feudal society was not doing well. As there weren’t serfs to work for them, they even had to raise the price for salary in order to get people to work for them. Due to this, the feudal society was weakened as they were going into something like the depression of the Harlem Renaissance. Soon there was a rebirth of Europe due to the sudden reopening of the Silk roads with protection led them to the rebirth. There was a rebirth of art, literature, and so much more.

Between these two eras, there isn't much of a difference between why the recession happened and what improved and so on. The Harlem Renaissance was more of a depression and having to do with the race of African Americans. However, due to the Hundred Years' War and the plague, the feudal society also weakened as there was soon the Dark Ages. As they both had depressions and Dark ages, they soon had a rebirth known as the Renaissance. These two are very related yet different.

Harlem is Copying Europe!

The Harlem Renaissance

Everyone has heard of the European Renaissance, right? But do they know about the Harlem Renaissance? The Harlem Renaissance was a time period between 1920s-1930s where creativity and arts in New York flourished. It was after the World War 1 when huge groups of African Americans moved from the countryside to the urban cities. At first, the movement was called the "New Negro Movement" where people had literary discussions among themselves in Manhattan, but it later was renamed into the "Harlem Renaissance". The Harlem "Rebirth" brought imagination into writing, art, and music with additions of African American heritage.

Alain Locke brought together works of famous writers like Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, and Anne Spencer (only few of the many) during the Harlem Renaissance and named the book The New Negro.
