Aladdin... Stereotypes...

Watching Aladdin was really nice, but the point was to find some stereotypes, so here they are!
There were many examples of stereotypes of Islamics in the movie Aladdin. One stereotype was that there were thieves about the markets along the streets, which was probably true. Aladdin stole food in order to live. The people who sold the items were probably mad about the thieves, like in the movie. Another stereotype was that everyone wore baggy clothing, and that the sultans and princes wore those bouncy big hats. A third stereotype was that there were magic lamps, genies and magic carpets in Islam. It would be really awesome if you could own a carpet that could take you anywhere, but these were probably not real. But, it made the movie more magical and interesting to watch. In the movie, there were elephants, camels, a tiger and a monkey. There were likely animals in Islam, but maybe not the same ones. Also, the daughter of the sultan had to marry a suitor. This might have been true. The palace in the movie was gigantic, and probably if there were any palaces in Islam, they would have been big like the movie. The movie Aladdin was similar to life in Islam.

So stereotypical! :)

Hello my fellow peers! :)

History class was easy... BECAUSE ALL WE DID WAS WATCH ALADDIN, EAT POPCORN, AND LIST STEREOTYPES OF ISLAMIC CULTURE! :D Just kidding! It was quite interesting in how MANY stereotypes there were, even though Aladdin is just one of those, "Classic Disney Movies." For instance, here are some stereotypes I found:

First of all, their outfits: Almost all of the characters in this movie, excluding the bad guy, the genie, and the animals, wore billowy pants! :) Also, most of the men wore turbans, piling on top of their heads (Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa! :D).

Secondly, the setting: In the midst of a desert, with hunching camels and the starry sky warning us of midnight, the movie starts, a stereotype of the Islamic region. The busy, bustling marketplace, where the commoners, and thiefs, roam; the palace with the HUGE cupcake like domes on top; the shabby streets and alleyways where starving children and people crave for a meal: These are all not only stereotypes but also, kind of what this region is really like. :)

Third, the characters: Of course, there is a beautiful princess and the "prince," but how are they stereotypes? Well, Aladdin represents those commoners/orphans etc. who steal just to live. This is again, one of the stereotypes of Islamic culture. Also, Jasmine represents the wealthy, upper-class families that we know reside in this region.

There are many stereotypes of Islamic culture, as there are for the United States. We can even find some out through a Disney movie!!!!! :D

Aladdin. . . A Whole New World!!!

Today, we watched the famous Disney movie, Aladdin which relates to the next chapter we'll be learning about in social studies, Islam. Even though, we all know there's no such thing as magic genies granting your wishes and flying carpets, there are also alot of other things from Aladdin that is similar to Islam. Some of the stereotype and true information about Islam based on Aladdin is that Islam is a city of mystery. To start off, some of the animals they probably owned are camels, monkeys, and elephants. Islam probably had some places full of sand and large gust of winds. Furthermore, Islam was a pretty poor place and most of the kids and people were starving with barely anything to eat except for the sultans and princesses who lives in palaces and are rich. In the marketplace located in the streets, there are merchants selling pottery, jewelry, and food. However, there are also burglars trying to steal the items especially valuable ones. There 's also a dungeon where they threw the burglars in with rats crawling around. In the Islamic world, the men dressed in turbans with puffy pants and the women wore shawls/scarves except the royalty; they dressed differently. As you can see, the movie Aladdin is quite similar to life in Islam.
Aladdin! Jamine! Genie! Abu! Iago! Magic Carpet! Rocks!

ALADDIN!!!

Genies and flying carpets are found in the movie, Aladdin. We all know that's genies and flying carpets don't exist, but it's kinda awesome. Also, you can't hypnotize people by sticking a snake-shaped staff in their face/ and commanding them what to do. The evil person, Jafar, is portrayed with the colors BLACK and RED (evil). The bird, (i forgot his name), has bushy eyebrows and a rough voice.

Some stereotypes are that the sultans and the princes' wear the big bouncy hats with a feather on the top.

What is familiar in the Islam world and Aladdin?

So we watched the movie Aladdin and have to make a blog about the stereotypes and relationships of the Islamic world. To begin with, they have merchants that sell merchandise, such as jewelry, food, pottery, and maybe, weapons. They also had muggers or robbers that steal valuable things, so beware. The Islamic world had several outfits for their jobs or royalty. Like, some women dancers wear those scarf-like things. Islam was a poor place, and some children are in need of food. Some architecture, such as the princesses' palace, is related to Rome and the U.S.A. The movie Aladdin did mostly good on the outfits, in my opinion. The stereotypes had a lot of examples, mine is that they had people from Aladdin who are related to the Islamic world and they had similar personalities. This is some of my thoughts about Aladdin and the Islamic world.

THE MOVIE ALADDIN'S STEREOTYPES AND INFORMATION ABOUT ISLAM!!!!!!

OK!!! During the first part of the movie Aladdin that we watched today, there were a few stereotypes and true information about the Islamic world. Some of the information was that Islamic people do markets in the streets for example, they sell jewelry, pots, and of course food. Also, when someone steals anything in general, they have to pay the price of cutting their hand off. Also, obviously the men that are Islamic wear turbans and the women wear scarves. Some stereotypes are that all dungeons are spooky and have dirty rats in there.

Islam. What Is It?

Next week we will start learning about Islam. Islam is a religion, is it a country? Well I want to know. How did Islam start? Did it start along time ago? I want to know. I want to know what the people believed in. The economy, maybe they had rulers. I want answers to these questions. I'm looking forward to getting answers next week.

hmmm..what about islam??

For our next chapter, Islam, I want to learn about a lot of things. Some of these things are their religion, their customs, and some other things about how they lived. I would want to learn these things because with this information, I can learn about various parts of the world and a lot about their culture. Hopefully, we'll do some more fun stuff like the skits. :)

What I want to learn about Islam

I want to learn how people in Islam lived.

I want to learn...

There are many things I want to learn about Islam, including their religion, customs/culture, laws if they had any, government, and everyday life. I heard that Islam is a growing religion, and I want to learn how it spread and what beliefs they believed in. I want to learn about their culture, what kind of food they ate (if it was yummy or disgusting), and what customs they had. I would like to learn about their government, laws, and how they controlled Islam, so I can see if it's similar to the US today and compare it with other places we have already learned about. Learning about their everyday life, such as what they did everyday (did they work?), what they cooked, what they did at their homes, and how families were organized would be very interesting. Can't wait to start the new chapter(kinda) ! :D

the islam thing of thing

I want to know the origin of Muslims. I want to know who made the religion, and what the people do when practicing that religion. I'm not sure which "god" they believed in, so I want to learn what they would do. I want to know their sacred possessions and their rules about life.

Islam: What I'D like to know

Well, I really want to know what kinds of jobs they do, their social pyramid, and daily life. I want to learn about their jobs because they could have had legacies because o9f it. I want to learn about their social pyramid because I want to know where each citizen is placed in their world. And I want to learn about their daily life because I want to know how it was hard or easy for each person's class.
~TTTP, Bianca T.

Islam: Which Is. . .

For our next lesson, Islam, I would like to learn abut their culture, traditions, beliefs, foods. . . yum, code of law, what they did for fun. . . if any, and the languages they spoke. Islam might end up a little different from other places we've had learned about and probably totally different from us here in the U.S.A. Furthermore, hopefully, Mr. G will let us do fun things while studying about Islam!

What I Want to Know of Islamic Religion

Throughout history, there have been many religions that changed many people's actions. One of the most enormous religions impacting society was Christianity. Several other major religions included Islam, Muslim, and Hinduism. I want to know about the Islamic religion, the second-largest religion in the world.
  • Do they worship a slab of stone? If yes, why?

  • How did Islam spread?

  • Who is Mohammad?

  • What are their cultures?

I am very interested about Islamic religion because I don't know much of their cultures and what they do.

READ THIS TOO!!! (what i wanna learn about islam)

What is Islam? Is it a religion? Is it a country? Do they have McDonalds there? Do they love Subway there like in the United States? These questions will be answered by the history book this week as my class reads about Islam. What I want to learn about is Islam's cultures, religions, and economy...and if there are Subways there...
mn

What is Islam?

We will be learning about Islam in history class. So what do I want to learn about the Islamic world? I have no clue because I don't know anything about Islam. But I don't even want to learn anything about it.

BUT, I have a question begging for an answer. Do all parts of Islam believe in the religion of Islam? What is even the religion of Islam? Did they persecute Christians like the Romans did?
HAHAHAH. RIGHT NOW I JUST FOUND OUT THAT ISLAM IS A RELIGION! SO PART OF MY QUESTION DOESN'T MAKE SENSE BUT WHO CARES.

Hmmmm. Well we'll just have to study about Islam to find the answer to my questions even though I don't like studying :)

Knowing is Growing! (Knowing about Islam)

If knowing is growing then i want to be big and tall! Since we are going into the chapter about Islamics, i want to learn more about it. One thing i really want to know is about Islam. i heard that Islam, Hebrew, and Christianity come from the same origin, yet have different beliefs. when i tried to ask how that could be, my dad fell asleep. Later i heard it was Muslim, Hebrew and Christianity. Then i got confused cuz i always thought they were the same thing. i really want to clarify this and also learn more about Islam's origins and how their traditions work.

What I want to discover about Islam! by Nicole

What I want to discover about Islam, is their culture/religion. All the religions are unique and different of the ancient world. I want to know if they're montheastic or polytheastic. Are they Christian or or do they beleive in several gods such as the Sun god or something? I am really interested to find out!

If I were to learn about Islam........

What I want to learn about Islam is how did Islam begin. Who were the rulers? Were they kings and queens, emperors and emperess? Did they had an army, if so, were they a strong, powerful army conquereing others? What about their dieting? Did they relate their dieting to the Roman Empire? These questions can be answered, but this is what I want to know.

WE'RE GOING TO EUROPE!!!!!!!

On our trip to Europe, some things that we should definitely visit are the Colosseum, where gladiators once fought, the Parthenon, which was built to worship Athena, and maybe we can even visit the Madrid Cathedral, which declared Madrid an official city in Spain. This would lead you to the urge to see some art. The Romans of Ancient Rome painted many murals on the palace walls. In some churches mosaics still remain and life-like statues of gods, goddesses, emperors and other important people can still be seen. After a long day you would need something to eat. Many different varieties of food are served throughout Europe. Rome is a great place for pizza and pasta. The ancient Roman Empire went from a kingdom to a republic to an empire. Most of European land now is mostly a republic or a democracy.

Learning about Islam

Islam has many wonderful information that most people don't know about and that includes me. I want to know the socio-cultural, technology, economic, enviromental, and political sides of Islam. For socio-cultural, my question is, "What religion did they have and who did they worshipped? What did they use to trade with other people? Did they have any struggles with their government? What did they grow and what agriculture? So many questions that we all have and i am lookin forward in learning all the answers.

RELIGION

I would like to know what the religion of Islam was.I got interested in knowing the religion because I seen a page on Google that said, "Islam, the second largest world religion..ans still growing. So know im hooked and want to find out the religion.

WHAT I WANT TO LEARN........

Hello Mr. G!!! What I want to learn about the beginning of Islam is their religion, either they are polytheistic or if they are monotheistic. From what I learned, they were Monotheistic meaning that they only worship in one god. Also, I have learned that the Arabic people were nomads
meaning that they moved place to place. They also lived in an oasis which is a desert with water. Now, I WOULD LOVE TO LEARN about the cultures of Islamic people, their foods, more information about their religion, and their clothing. During Chapter 3, The Beginning of Islam, I hope I would learn the wanted things I want to know from the Social Studies book.

This is the picture of one the
Islamic Religion Symbols.

Islam, a New World of Wonder

After reading the last few chapters in the Social Studies book, I am very excited to read the new lesson. From this lesson, I wish to learn about many different aspects such as who was Mohammad and why he was so important. I also want to learn more about the Islamic religion and who the believed.

A trip back to ancient rome

Rome was a great empire that like many empires fell because of to much power. A place I think we should visit would be the colosseum. I think we should visit this place because it was important in rome to help distract people's mind off of the trubles they were having. We should also visit what used to be their churches. I think we should visit the churches because their main religion ,wich was christianity, is still a very important religion today.
-Katy B.☺

Islam

What I would like to learn about the Muslims is their religion which is Islam. I would also like to learn more about their culture and their daily life. I wonder what god they believed in. That is what I would like to learn.

Islam and its Growth

Islam and its Growth

There are many things I do not know about Islam yet. So here is what I would like to learn about Islam. I would first likes to learn about the Islamic cultures. Every culture is different. Same with Islam. I'm also very curious about the foods that the Islamic people eat. Hopefully, it's not that disgusting of what the Romans ate. These are the main things about Islam i would really be interested to know. I would also like to learn about the Islamic Religion. I don't really know if their religion is different from the rest. So i would like to find that out. Hopefully, all my questions will be answered.'

-Jennifer Poh

P.S Doesn't these dishes look just DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cuz I have nothing to do.....

Speaking of Islam. I have a few questions to be answered just because. S.T.E.E.P
Looking at the map on pg 80-81, I am curious how the Islams managed to conquer the Persians in Mesopotamia, and what weapons did they use to defeat their enemies? Did the Islams come long after the Persians? And how did they manage to conquer Egypt because seriously, I don't believe I could do that. Besides, what did they worship, and how did that come to be? When did they stop bartering and using coins, and what type of governement did they have, a monarchy? Ok I ask too many questions. I get it! Now looking at my nerdiness level, I believe that maybe in 2017 I will learn all this information.

-Allison Yoon <3>

What I want to learn about Islam

I want to learn about how the Islam ruled their empire. Was there some religions that were banned and some that had to be worshipped. Like in the Roman Empire Christianiny was banned for a few centuries. I even want to know that if your were this religion in Islam you would be killed. I want to learn where Islam was and how the natural resources helped it. If there was famous buildings there, I would want to learn that. I want to know which if the Islam ruler was the most powerful and which one destroyed Islam. The last thing that I would want to learn is their art.
-Kyle Lu LOL

Hmmmmm.... (?)

Hello! XD

Islam. What do I know about Islam? I practically know nothing about Islam. Now, what do I want to know is the question. My "hypothesis" is that Islam was not only a dominant region, but a culture as well. It was probably thriving in business and not as much warfare, opposite of the Romans. (This is all from my very VAGUE understanding of Islam :D) Through this chapter, I want my questions about Islam answered. Here they are!

1) I really do not know ANYTHING about Islam so... What is Islam? :)
2)What made Islam such an important region that it would even appear in a history textbook? Was it their legacy? Their people? Or their trade/business? What was it EXACTLY?

3) Did Islam and Islamic people make any new discoveries or major advancements in PEST?
Or maybe even environmental? Did they use the environment to their advantage?

These are all my questions so I hope they'll be answered in this chapter!

(Goodbye! :D)

The Best Trip to Ancient Rome

In a trip to the ancient times of Rome, we will be exploring the ruins of the Roman Empire, where its cultures can be seen today. This formerly large and prosperous empire completely surrounded the Mediterranean Sea at its largest point in history.

Now, traveling to the city of Rome where most of the empire's wealth was, much Roman features still lay. The Circus Maximus, meaning "greatest circus" in Latin, was the first and also the largest chariot racing track, specially made for Etruscan rulers as an entertainment grounds, but also later used for Roman purposes.

Next, the Colosseum, used as the amphitheatre of Rome was one of the greatest creations of Roman architecture and engineering. One of the many of the Roman entertainments performed inside the the Colosseum was gladiator battles, and so many people died as gladiators. Additionally, sometimes drama were also acted out in the Colosseum.

As emperor, Constantine let Romans freely worship Christianity as they liked, while additionally claiming himself as a Christian. To today, about one third of the population of the world is Christian, a religion that began in Rome. In commemoration of Constantine's military victory against Maxentius, a structure was built, named the Arch of Constantine after Constantine died.

To Rome!

For our field trip to the Roman Empire, what better place to visit, than the city Rome? we can see and observe the leftover ruins and learn about the arts, architecture, and engineering skills of past Romans. We can also go visit the Sistine chapel to learn more about Rome's religion, while also observing the famous ceiling filled with art done by Michelangelo. we can eat food from restaurants there and see how the people of Rome liked their food. Of course, we should also travel to a different side of Rome, a poorer side and compare life in the poorer part and the richer part of Rome.
http://www.livius.org/a/italy/rome/colosseum/colosseum19.jpg( this is a picture of the colleseum at night, i couldn't get the "add image" button to work.)

Vacation. . .Yeah!

We're taking a trip to Europe to visit Rome. . . yeah! Rome has been blossoming over the last few years. To start off our trip, we should first visit the rich Vatican City where the Vatican Palace is located. . . why not see something cool to start off our trip. From there, we can visit the Colosseum in which you can watch chariot races and wrestling/fighting with other entertainment. Other good places would be the Bath of Diocletian or the Roman Forum. Without a doubt, we should stop by the Sistine Chapel in which Michaelangelo's artwork on the ceiling that took four years to paint is there for all to see. Furthermore, there are also good food in Rome, Italy including: pizza- of course, tasty appetizers, Italian sausage, pasta- including spagetti, lasgana, carbonara, and alfredo served with breadsticks and creme brulee for desert. If not, we can visit Gelateria del Teatro, the best gelato shop ever for some gelato/ice-cream. . . yum!
