So stereotypical! :)

Hello my fellow peers! :)

History class was easy... BECAUSE ALL WE DID WAS WATCH ALADDIN, EAT POPCORN, AND LIST STEREOTYPES OF ISLAMIC CULTURE! :D Just kidding! It was quite interesting in how MANY stereotypes there were, even though Aladdin is just one of those, "Classic Disney Movies." For instance, here are some stereotypes I found:

First of all, their outfits: Almost all of the characters in this movie, excluding the bad guy, the genie, and the animals, wore billowy pants! :) Also, most of the men wore turbans, piling on top of their heads (Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa! :D).

Secondly, the setting: In the midst of a desert, with hunching camels and the starry sky warning us of midnight, the movie starts, a stereotype of the Islamic region. The busy, bustling marketplace, where the commoners, and thiefs, roam; the palace with the HUGE cupcake like domes on top; the shabby streets and alleyways where starving children and people crave for a meal: These are all not only stereotypes but also, kind of what this region is really like. :)

Third, the characters: Of course, there is a beautiful princess and the "prince," but how are they stereotypes? Well, Aladdin represents those commoners/orphans etc. who steal just to live. This is again, one of the stereotypes of Islamic culture. Also, Jasmine represents the wealthy, upper-class families that we know reside in this region.

There are many stereotypes of Islamic culture, as there are for the United States. We can even find some out through a Disney movie!!!!! :D

Good job, Courtney! You picked out a lot of good stereotypes. I especially like the part about the turbans piling on top of their heads like the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

I like how some of the stereotypes didn't have to do with the Islamic world and extended to things like a love story.
